Known as the “Garden City,” Singapore’s dedication to integrat- ing the environment with urban development dates back nearly 50 years
to a vision cast by its founding
prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew. The
approach was a practical one, given
that the island city-state has few
So it’s no surprise that Singapore
is home to southeast Asia’s first
retrofitted net zero energy building.
A case study in this issue describes
how Singapore’s Building and
Construction Authority retrofitted a
three-story building to demonstrate
best sustainable building practices.
After five years of operation,
the building continues to operate on a net zero energy basis
despite increased energy demands.
Building managers have maintained
the net zero energy balance by looking for additional energy savings
ASIA’S ECONOMIC BOOM
underscores the importance of sustainable design practices. China is
the leader of this growth, building
the equivalent living space of a city
like Rome in about two weeks and a
country like the United Kingdom or
Spain every year. Total investment
in construction reached about $16
trillion in 2012, and even with a
weakened economy has growth rates
projected at 20% or more.
In an effort to highlight and promote the construction of buildings
that have reduced environmental
impacts, HPB Magazine is launching a Chinese edition. Planned
to be published twice per year, it
will launch in April at the China
Refrigeration Expo and is being
published by ASHRAE in partnership with the Chinese Association
The inaugural issue will include
translations of two previously published case studies, one new case
study on an innovative Hong Kong
project, and republication of one
case study in English.
HPB’S OTHER BIG NEWS is
our website, www.hpbmagazine.org.
In January, the site was redesigned
and its infrastructure rebuilt to better enable HPB case studies to be
found by search engines. The intent
is to make the HPB site a “go to”
web-based resource for designers
looking for successful solutions.
Accompanying the redesign,
HPB launched a mobile app for
iOS and Android devices that puts
these case studies into the palm of
your hand and makes them available for quick retrieval on a tablet.
Case studies can be searched and
are displayed in a manner that is
responsive to screen dimensions. To
download, go to www.hpbmagazine.
We welcome your feedback.
